Pura Mengening merupakan situs kuno yang diperkirakan telah ada sejak 1022 Masehi, pada masa Pemerintahan Raja Marakata. Pura ini pertama kali ditemukan oleh WF Sutterheim sekitar tahun 1925 hingga 1927. Kemudian seorang peneliti bernama Bernet Kempers menyatakan, terdapat sebuah kuil dengan sisa-sisa bangunan di atas bukit kecil pada tahun 1960.
